Teaching Committee
The Teaching Committee is one of the special committees organized by the Conference on Latin American History (CLAH) to carry out its goal of improving the teaching of Latin American history. Its members must be members of the Conference. The Teaching Committee meets at the annual convention to conduct its formal business, to plan future activities, and to foster the exchange of ideas related to teaching. It also publishes regular columns in the CLAH newsletter and maintains this website to make available materials and resources essential to the teaching of Latin American history.
Teaching Indigenous Histories
The CLAH Teaching and Teaching Materials Committee would like to call for roundtable discussants at the CLAH 2008 meeting on the topic “Teaching Indigenous Histories.” Scholarship on the history of indigenous peoples has flourished in recent decades. How are we bringing that research into our classrooms? What methods, readings, and tools seem to reach students the best? How can we help our undergraduates grasp the variety of “indigenous” experiences in Latin America over the centuries? What are our greatest challenges in teaching indigenous history? Can attention to indigenous histories in our classes help us to forge new broad historical narratives in the classroom?
We are particularly interested in innovative approaches and new practices. Please forward suggestions for participants to the CLAH TC chair Marc Becker at marc@yachana.org and secretary Erin O’Connor at EOConnor@bridgew.edu.
All members of CLAH are invited to join and participate with the Teaching Committee at its annual meeting. Individuals interested in joining the Teaching Committee should contact Marc Becker at marc@yachana.org.
